Not all of your time is spent wandering around fighting monsters. Everyone has something they want to do in life besides catch Pokemon (or they should, anyway) and this system is intended to allow Trainers to express that. Or mess around – whichever floats your boat. You can fit a maximum of 3 Downtime Phases into a single day of activity.
-
-
- When a creature enters the Downtime Phase, it completely refreshes the use of any Daily moves and its PP, if possible. It may also take an Extended Rest and use the Training Regimen Command power for free.
- You can take up to 2 Downtime Actions per Downtime Phase. After the first Downtime Action is resolved, you should roll on the Downtime Encounter table to see if anything happens; your Lifestyle determines which table you roll on. You may take your second Downtime Action after the encounter is resolved. Expect the unexpected, even while in town.
- If you enter the Downtime Phase in the wilderness, consult the Travelling minigame for details, as this phase is resolved slightly differently than if you were in the safety of town.
-
- The list of all possible Downtime Actions are as follows:

- Extended Rest – Completely remove Persistent Status conditions with a Tier equal to or lower than the creature’s, regain the use of Daily moves, and restore PP if possible. Heal 1 HP Tick per continuous hour of rest.
- Training Regimen Power – Train # of creatures (including yourself) equal to your Command Rank, they gain (1 x Tier) XP and become Agile/Brutal/Focus/Inspired until the end of your next Extended Rest.
- Bond with a Pokemon – Spend some quality time with a single Pokemon, it gains +1 Loyalty Point.
- Gather Scrap – You gain (5 x Skill Rank) Scrap. You require Novice Rank in a skill to collect its corresponding Scrap.
- Food Scrap – Intuition or Survival
- General Scrap – General Edu.
- Magic Scrap – Occult Edu.
- Medicine Scrap – Medicine Edu.
- Poke-Scrap – Pokemon Edu.
- Tech Scrap – Tech Edu.
- Survival Scrap – Survival
- Go Catch a Pokemon – Based on your Classes and your location, you go out and return with a Pokemon equal to Your Level – 2. See your Class for details on what you can catch, but the list may be limited by where you are at the time, or it may modify the Pokemon you may usually catch. Maybe catching a fish in the Ghost World makes it a ghost fish? You must be at least level 3 to use this Downtime Action. At Tier 1, you may only catch Common pokemon; at Tier 2, Uncommon pokemon; at Tier 3 Rare pokemon; at Tier 4 Unique pokemon. Requires at least 1 empty Pokeball and Bait.
- Go To A Study – If you have access to one, you can try to gather information from a Study, such as a library or a computer with internet access. While in a Study, you may take X on your Recall Factoid and Glean Weakness powers, where X is 2 + Study’s Tier, although this may be limited by the Study you are in. The Tier of a study corresponds to the quantity and quality of the information in it – a public wiki might be a Tier 1 Study for all Educations, but a private medical journal portal would be a Tier 2 or 3 Medicine Study. You may or may not be charged money for access to a Study.
- Go To A Workshop – If you have access to one, you can try to make something at a Workshop, such as a medical laboratory, restaurant, garden, or so on. Workshops correspond to a specific Crafting category skill, the same as in the Gather Scrap action. While in a Workshop, you may take X on your Craftwork powers, where X is 2 + Workshop’s Tier. The Tier of a Workshop corresponds to the quality of the tools available in it. You may or may not be charged money for access to a Workshop.
- Have A Good Time – You spend some time recreationally socializing with other people in town. You state which Lifestyle you are engaging in for this Action and pay ½ the week’s Lifestyle Cost to do it. For X weeks, you gain a +X bonus to social rolls with people whose Lifestyle is the same as the people you socialized with. X is equal to 1 + Your Tier.
- Increase in Level – You spend (10 x Tier) XP points to go to the next level. May only be done once per day.
- Use a Skill Power – See the individual Skill Power for details.
- Work in a Profession – You make a Profession Check, gaining money equal to your check result times the profession’s Base Income. You can take 3 on this check. This is assuming that there’s an available position for your profession, though… For X days, you also gain a +2 bonus to social rolls with people whose Lifestyle is the same as your Profession. X is equal to 1 + Your Tier. You can only Work twice per day, four days per week. Something about “labor laws”.
- Work on a Task – You make an Extended Skill Check to try and complete a Task. Tasks are personal projects that each individual Trainer works on in their spare time. These are open-ended and are used to gain Edges. The Base DC of the Extended Skill Check is (50 x Edge’s Tier) and is multiplied by 2-5, depending on the complexity of the Task. Further details can be found in the Edges section.
You can also exchange a Downtime Action for 2 Extended (L) Actions, 4 Extended (S) Actions, or 1 Extended (L) Action and 2 Extended (S) Actions.
Your Trainer’s Lifestyle is influential on your Downtime Phases, as well as social rolls against people of the same Lifestyle as you. It measures you and your Pokemon’s general quality of life, but does not cover technical resources or major impersonal items. You have a +2 to Social rolls against people who share the same Lifestyle as you.
- There are 5 levels of Lifestyle, ranging from 0-4.
- 0 – Homeless: You live on the edge of society. You have to scrounge for food as if you were in the wilderness. You’re probably in the actual wilderness. The typical Lifestyle of wandering Trainers until they get enough money for a hotel room. Cost: $0/week
- 1 – Low Class: You have shelter and regular food. Things aren’t great, but they could be worse. You can supply yourself and 2 Pokemon with Resources every day. Cost: $200/week
- 2 – Middle Class: You live in a nice place and are well-fed, and likely have access to private non-Pokemon transportation. You probably have hobby money, too. You can supply yourself and 4 Pokemon with Resources every day. Cost: $500/week
- 3 – High Class: Life is easy and comfortable for you. You don’t have to worry about Resources when outside of town, as you’ve always purchased more than enough beforehand. Cost: $1000/week
- 4 – Rich Class: You’ve got access to the best of the best everything. If you aren’t an important person, you surely know people who are, and you never want for anything. Not only do you have enough Resources for your own party, but enough for 1 other Trainer and all their Pokemon, as well. You’re so rich you can even feed Pokemon that have specialized diets, such as Sableye. Cost: 1 P-Crystal/week
- You pay for your Lifestyle every 7 days. You are generally assumed to have access to most General Items 1 Quality below your Lifestyle and can say you previously purchased it “off-screen”, but only once per day, and you lose access to the item if your Lifestyle decreases. For example, someone with a Middle Class Lifestyle can spontaneously pull a Potion out of their backpack, but couldn’t generate anything else that day. Someone with a High Class Lifestyle could pull out a Bike, but it would either be sold off or tragically destroyed if they became Middle Class.
- The Pokemon world is highly understanding towards those stricken by wanderlust, so you may pre-purchase and/or postpone the number of days left in your Lifestyle. You could pay $800 for a month’s worth of Low Class life, or if you have 4 days left of High Class life, you could become Homeless and go on an adventure for a while, resuming your 4 days upon your return. However, if you can afford to maintain your Lifestyle abroad, you will still have access to items you might not have known you’d need beforehand, so splitting days up is not typically recommended.
- People (PCs, especially), can live together to save on money. There are 2 main ways of doing so:
- Guests: One character crashes at another’s place, and the host takes responsibility for them. When rolling for Downtime encounters, you roll on the lower of you and your guest’s Lifestyle chart. Cost (Host): +20% per guest Cost (Guest): 0%
- Roommates: Two or more characters live together to split the costs. Characters that are roommates tend to get dragged into one another’s Downtime encounters whether they like it or not. Cost (Roommate): -20% per roommate
- Higher level PCs tend to become property owners: the amount of income drawn in usually covers a week’s worth of pay for the corresponding Lifestyle. A Gym Leader who is actually in charge of their own Gym, for example, would automatically make $500/week without needing to spend downtime on working in that Profession, although they could personally work there for more money. This is assuming that they have no Lifestyle Modifiers, of course.
